Seven Tips for Protecting Yourself Online

The Internet has many advantages, it can also make users vulnerable to fraud, identity theft and other forms of scams. According to a McAfee cybercrime report, the estimated total cost to the global economy is about $400 billion annually. Following the tips below can assist in reducing the likelihood that you will become a victim of a cybercrime:

  1. Keep your mobile devices and computers up to date. The latest security software, web browser and operating systems are the best defense against malware and other online threats. Automatic updates helps you receive the newest fixes as they become available.
  2. Use antivirus/antimalware. Use of antivirus software helps reduce the risk that a fraudster may gain access to your systems and data.
  3. Use strong passwords. Strong passwords are at least eight characters in length and include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.
  4. Be on the lookout for phishing scams. Phishing scammers use fraudulent emails and websites to trick users into disclosing private account information. Do not click on links or open any attachments or pop-ups from sources you are not familiar with or look suspicious to you.
  5. Keep personal information private. Fraudsters use social media profiles to figure out your passwords and answer security questions in password reset tools. Limit your privacy settings and avoid posting things like birthdays, addresses, mother's maiden name, etc.
  6. Secure your wireless connection. Protect your home wireless network with a password. When connecting to public wi-fi networks keep in mind others may be able to spy on your Internet traffic.
  7. Device Encryption. Many mobile phones and computers come with built-in encryption software. Encrypting devices with a password helps minimize the risk that a fraudster will gain access to your information, should the device be lost or stolen.
